1. Introduction to polyphenylene sulfide
The full name of polyphenylene sulfide is polyphenylene sulfide, and the English abbreviation is PPS.
Outstanding features of PPS include:
Good heat resistance, short-term resistance to 260°C, long-term work in the range of 180~220°C;
The chemical corrosion resistance is second only to PTFE, and it is stable to most acids, alkalis, salts, esters, ketones, aldehydes, phenols and aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, etc., and is not resistant to chlorinated biphenyls and oxidizing acids, oxidants, concentrated sulfuric acid, aqua regia, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, etc.;
The electrical properties are very outstanding, compared with other engineering plastics, its dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent value are relatively low, and there is little change in a wide range of frequency, temperature and humidity, and the arc resistance is good, which is comparable to thermosetting plastics;
Good flame retardant performance, its oxygen index is as high as more than 44%, and it is a high flame retardant material in plastics;
The rigidity is very high, which is rare in engineering plastics, with good creep resistance under load, high hardness, high wear resistance, and low sensitivity of mechanical properties to temperature;
Good radiation resistance and weather resistance.
Disadvantages of PPS:
The price is too high, although it is a low price in high-temperature resistant plastics, it is much higher than that of general-purpose engineering plastics, poor toughness, brittleness, and unstable viscosity in processing.
Pure PPS is rarely used alone due to its brittleness, and the PPS applied is its modified variety. Specifically, there are: 40% glass fiber reinforced PPS (R-4), inorganic filled PPS (R-8), carbon fiber reinforced PPS (G-6), etc.
2. Processing methods and applications
PPS can be molded by injection molding, extrusion, molding, spraying, etc. Typical applications:
(1) The automotive industry PPS is used in the automobile industry accounting for about 45%, mainly used for automotive functional parts, such as the production of exhaust cylinder circulation valves, water pumps, fuel pumps, impellers of electric pumps, pneumatic signal control valves, etc.
(2) Electronic and electrical PPS can account for 30% of the use in the electronic and electrical industry. It is suitable for high-temperature electrical components with ambient temperature higher than 200 °C, and can be used to manufacture brushes, brush brackets, starter coil skeletons, shielding covers and blades on generators and motors; in televisions, it can be used for shells and sockets, binding posts and terminal boards of high-voltage devices; in electrical appliance manufacturing, it is used for the skeleton and housing of transformers, chokes and relay coils; and by using its high-frequency characteristics, it can manufacture H-class winding frames and trimming capacitors.
(3) Machinery industry for shells, structural parts, wear-resistant parts and sealing materials, such as pump bodies, valves, bearings, bearing support frames, piston rings and gears.
